Panthers (puma concolor) are one of nature’s most majestic creatures, and (per the WI DNR) they are apparently known in many places by many names: Mountain Lion, Cougar, Panther, Catamount, American Lion, and Mishibijn (Ojibwa).
In the Manitowoc County Panther Watch, most of us call them “panthers”, although all these names (and more) are acceptable.
Panthers once roamed throughout Wisconsin, and several confirmed sightings are reported in WI most years, although these are typically males originating from farther west, and ranging out into our state on the search for territory, prey, or mates.
Currently a breeding population is not known to exist in WI, although really who can know such a thing, as panthers are quite mysterious!
